Jesse Gilson Key Points

Vivas are, by design, non-linear in the sense that there is no one “correct” pathway at key decision points
A key goal is to test high-level judgment and decision-making by:
Presenting scenarios with competing interests that require a concrete goal or plan of action to be identified
Making crises slow-moving and vague to begin with rather than jumping straight into a pre-determined algorithm
Incorporating ethical and professional standards
Safe management of the scenario is necessary but not sufficient to pass the viva - it will only get you to a 4/10 in isolation
A “consultant-like” approach is needed to pass, which entails:
Appropriate clinical AND situational management (big picture - resources, personnel, location, ethical concerns, risk/benefit)
Suggested approach to opening stem
1 minute: read the stem TWICE and identify the ISSUES and the CONFLICTS
1 minute: answer the question, both in terms of the CLINICAL management and the SITUATIONAL concerns (”consultant-like”)
